Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” (post 2): What is the significance of the title? Plath’s father was an entomologist. Bell jars are used in entomology.

The conventional view seems to be that the title is only a metaphor for entrapment: http://www.shmoop.com/bell-jar/title.html

However, Plath’s father was an entomologist, and bell jars are used in entomology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R_GKoiCloI

So the title may be a reference to the author’s father.
