“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” (post 2) by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Author uses convention of Italics to quote a voice in Monique’s head
After Monique, whose husband had left her, had started her interviews of Evelyn Hugo, she confides in the reader that “what plays in the back of my mind all weekend…isn’t How did my marriage fail? but rather Who the hell was Evelyn Hugo in love with? (1, p.37).
Comment: Something that plays in your mind is something you hear (a voice). And when someone who is not psychotic hears a rational voice in their head, it may be the voice of an alternate personality. All probably reflecting the mind of the author.
